Language opens any doors: Third Country Nationals’ integration into Lithuanian society

“Language opens any doors” is a project funded by the European European Fund for the Integration of third-country nationals annual work programme 2013. It aims to facilitate the integration process of the newly arrived non-EU immigrants into Lithuanian society and labour market by providing them with opportunity to gain the language skills and knowledge necessary for a quality life in a host country, helping them to break the barriers of social, personal and cultural adaptation in a new environment.

Methodology

Lithuanian language training A1 level is organized for the participants without any prior knowledge of Lithuanian language. Including: introductory seminars for potential participants, in-house formal instruction, non-formal practical instruction.

Non-formal practical instruction contains a series of interactive classes (42 hours). “Club-café” techniques applied during these classes, which in turn will:

  • help to improve students’ communicative skills,
  • decrease cultural and personal barriers due to its informal setting,
  • provide an opportunity for TCN participants to apply their speaking skills for introducing the culture and customs of their countries to other participants as well as discussing relevant topics about living in Lithuania.

Lithuanian language training A2 and B1 level are provided for the participants who have already acquired A1 or A2 level of Lithuanian language. The course will contain:introductory seminars for potential participants, placement tests, in-house formal instruction, non-formal practical instruction: interactive language clubs, Drama club techniques will be applied at these classes.

 Civic orientation courses consist of: introductory seminars for potential participants, in-house formal instruction, non-formal practical instruction - informational visits, events, cultural educational excursions.

By the end of the project 60 Third Country National (TCN) participants will acquire or improve their skills: 30 persons will be equipped with Lithuanian language skills of A1, and 30 persons - of A2-B1 comprehension level based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Also 20 persons will be given the opportunity to acquire knowledge about Lithuanian society, history, main laws, health care, education and social security systems, helping them to break the barriers of social, personal and cultural adaptation in a new environment.
